奥さんは心得のある人でしたから、わざと私をそんな風に取り扱つて呉れたものとも思はれますし、又自分で公言する如く、實際私を鷹揚だと觀察してゐたのかも知れません。私のこせつき方は頭の中の現象で、それ程外へ出なかつたやうにも考へられますから、或は奥さんの方で胡魔化されてゐたのかも解りません。

translation

Okusan was a knowledgeable person, so I think she deliberately treated me that way. yeah. I don't know if the way I behaved was a phenomenon in my head and I didn't really go out of my way, or maybe it was the wife who was being disguised.
