席を立たうとした時に、先生は急に私をつらまへて、「時に御父さんの病氣は何うなんです」と聞いた。私は父の健康に就いて殆んど知る所がなかつた。何とも云つて來ない以上、惡くはないのだらう位に考へてゐた。

translation

When I was about to leave my seat, the teacher suddenly asked me, "What is your father's illness?" I knew very little about my father's health. As long as he couldn't say anything, I assumed that it wasn't all bad.
