向ふの方で凸凹の地面をならして新墓地を作つてゐる男が、鍬の手を休めて私達を見てゐた。私達は其所から左へ切れてすぐ街道へ出た。

translation

A man across the street who was leveling the uneven ground to build a new cemetery was looking at us from his hoe. From there we turned left and immediately came out onto the highway.
