Kokoro, by Natsume Soseki (paragraph #384)

translation

"I sometimes apologized to my wife." It was the morning of the next day after I had come home too late, drunk. My wife laughed. Or it was silent. Occasionally, I would shed tears. Either way, I was displeased with myself and couldn't stand it. Therefore, apologizing to my wife is the same as apologizing to myself. I finally stopped drinking. Rather than saying that he stopped because of his wife's advice, it would be more appropriate to say that he stopped because he was sick of it.
