夕飯の時Ｋと私はまた顏を合せました。何にも知らないＫはたゞ沈んでゐた丈で、少しも疑ひ深い眼を私に向けません。何にも知らない奥さんは何時もより嬉しさうでした。私だけが凡てを知つてゐたのです。私は鉛のやうな飯を食ひました。其時御孃さんは何時ものやうにみんなと同じ食卓に竝びませんでした。奥さんが催促すると、次の室で只今と答へる丈でした。それをＫは不思議さうに聞いてゐました。仕舞に何うしたのかと奥さんに尋ねました。奥さんは大方極りが惡いのだらうと云つて、一寸私の顏を見ました。Ｋは猶不思議さうに、なんで極が惡いのかと追窮しに掛りました。奥さんは微笑しながら又私の顏を見るのです。
