「一週間ばかりして私は又Kと御孃さんが一所に話してゐる室を通り拔けました。其時御孃さんは私の顏を見るや否や笑ひ出しました。私はすぐ何が可笑しいのかと聞けば可かつたのでせう。それをつい默つて自分の居間迄來て仕舞つたのです。だからKも何時ものやうに、今歸つたかと聲を掛ける事が出來なくなりました。御孃さんはすぐ障子を開けて茶の間へ入つたやうでした。

translation

"About a week later, I passed by another room where K and the daughter were talking together. At that time, the moment she saw me, she started laughing. I should have just asked him what was so funny about it, so I quietly went to my living room and finished it off. It seemed that the daughter immediately opened the shoji screen and entered the living room.
