「子供でもあると好いんですがね」と奧さんは私の方を向いて云つた。私は「左右ですな」と答へた。然し私の心には何の同情も起らなかつた。子供を持つた事のない其時の私は、子供をただ蒼蠅いものゝ樣に考へてゐた。

translation

"I hope you're a child too," she said, turning to me. "Left and right," I replied. But no sympathy arose in my heart. At that time, I had never had a child, and I thought of children simply as if they were ugly things.
