其日は病人の出來がことに惡いやうに見えた。私が厠へ行かうとして席を立つた時、廊下で行き合つた兄は「何所へ行く」と番兵のやうな口調で誰何した。

translation

The sick person's appearance that day seemed particularly bad. When I got up to go to the toilet, my brother, whom I ran into in the hallway, asked me in a guard tone, "Where are you going?"
