私は心のうちで、其口は到底私の頭の上に落ちて來ないと思つてゐた。けれども事情にうとい父はまた飽く迄も其反對を信じてゐた。

translation

In my heart, I thought that his mouth would never fall on my head. However, my father, who was ignorant of the circumstances, believed the opposite until he got tired of it.
