もぎ取つて芝笛を鳴らした。ある鹿兒島人を友達にもつて、その人の眞似をしつゝ自然に習ひ覺えた私は、此芝笛といふものを鳴らす事が上手であつた。私が得意にそれを吹きつゞけると、先生は知らん顏をして餘所を向いて歩いた。

translation

I picked it up and blew the turf flute. I had a friend who was from Koji Island, and I naturally learned how to imitate him. When I continued to blow it proudly, Sensei looked oblivious and walked away.
