先生の言葉は寧ろ平靜であつた。世間に脊中を向けた人の苦味を帶びてゐなかつた丈に、私にはそれ程の手應もなかつた。私は先生を老い込んだとも思はない代りに、偉いとも感心せずに歸つた。

translation

The teacher's words were rather calm. I didn't feel the bitterness of those who turned their backs on the world, so I didn't have much of a response. Although I didn't think Sensei was old, I returned without being impressed by his greatness.
