妙なもので角砂糖を撮み上げた奧さんは、私の顏を見て、茶碗の中へ入れる砂糖の數を聞いた。奧さんの態度は私に媚びるといふ程ではなかつたけれども、先刻の強い言葉を力めて打ち消さうとする愛嬌に充ちてゐた。

translation

Okusan, who picked up a sugar cube with a strange object, looked at me and asked how much sugar to put in the bowl. Her attitude wasn't flattering to me, but she was full of charm, trying to counteract the strong words I had just said.
