私は奧さんの後に尾いて書齋を出た。茶の間には綺麗な長火鉢に鐵瓶が鳴つてゐた。私は其處で茶と菓子の御馳走になつた。奧さんは寐られないと不可いといつて、茶碗に手を觸れなかつた。

translation

I followed Oku-san out of the writing room. In the tea room, an iron kettle resounded in a beautiful long brazier. There I was treated to tea and sweets. Okusan insisted that it was impossible to sleep, so she could not touch the bowl.
