結婚した時御孃さんが、――もう御孃さんではありませんから、妻と云ひます。――妻が、何を思ひ出したのか、二人でKの墓參をしやうと云ひ出しました。私は意味もなく唯ぎよつとしました。何うしてそんな事を急に思ひ立つたのかと聞きました。妻は二人揃つて御參りをしたら、Kが嘸喜こぶだらうと云ふのです。私は何事も知らない妻の顏をしけじけ眺めてゐましたが、妻から何故そんな顏をするのかと問はれて始めて氣が付きました。

translation

"When I got married, my daughter--I'm no longer a daughter, so I call her my wife." -- My wife, for some reason, suggested that the two of us should visit K's grave. I was dumbfounded for no reason. I asked him why he suddenly thought of such a thing. My wife said that if the two of us went together, K would be delighted. I was staring at my wife's face, who knew nothing about it, but it wasn't until she asked me why I was making that face that I came to my senses.
