「Kと私は同じ科に居りながら、專攻の學問が違つてゐましたから、自然出る時や歸る時に遲速がありました。私の方が早ければ、たゞ彼の空室を通り拔ける丈ですが、遲いと簡單な挨拶をして自分の部屋へ這入るのを例にしてゐました。Kはいつもの眼を書物からはなして、襖を開ける私を一寸見ます。さうして屹度今歸つたのかと云ひます。私は何も答へないで點頭く事もありますし、或はたゞ『うん』と答へて行き過ぎる場合もありました。

“Even though K and I were in the same department, we had different tactics, so there was a delay when we naturally left and when we returned. I used the example of a slow, simple greeting before entering my room. There were times when I just sat down without answering, and there were times when I just said ``yes'' and went too far.
