父の病氣は最後の一撃を待つ間際迄進んで來て、其所でしばらく躊躇するやうに見えた。家のものは運命の宣告が、今日下るか、今日下るかと思つて、毎夜床に這入つた。

translation

His father's illness had progressed to the point where he was waiting for the final blow, and he seemed to hesitate for a while there. My family crawled into bed every night, wondering if the fate would come today or not.
