御孃さんは大層着飾つてゐました。地體が色の白い癖に、白粉を豐富に塗つたものだから猶目立ちます。往來の人がじろじろ見て行くのです。さうして御孃さんを見たものは屹度其視線をひるがへして、私の顏を見るのだから、變なものでした。

translation

"The daughter was very well dressed." The base is white, and the white powder is applied abundantly, so it stands out. People coming and going stare at me. People who saw the daughter would often shift their gaze and look at my face, so it was a strange thing.
