兄が歸つて來た時、父は寐ながら新聞を讀んでゐた。父は平生から何を措いても新聞丈には眼を通す習慣であつたが、床についてからは、退屈のため猶更それを讀みたがつた。母も私も強ひては反對せずに、成るべく病人の思ひ通りにさせて置いた。

translation

When my older brother came back, my father was sleeping and reading the newspaper. My father used to always read newspapers, but after he went to bed, he was bored and wanted to read more. Neither my mother nor I tried to force it against him, but let him do as he pleases.
