其時の私は屈托がないといふより寧ろ無聊に苦しんでゐた。それで翌日も亦先生に會つた時刻を見計らつて、わざ／＼掛茶屋迄出かけて見た。すると西洋人は來ないで先生一人麥藁帽を被つて遣つて來た。先生は眼鏡をとつて臺の上に置いて、すぐ手拭で頭を包んで、すた／＼濱を下りて行つた。先生が昨日の樣に騒がしい浴客の中を通り拔けて、一人で泳ぎ出した時、私は急に其後が追ひ掛けたくなつた。私は淺い水を頭の上迄跳かして相當の深さの所迄來て其所から先生を目標に拔手を切つた。すると先生は昨日と違つて、一種の弧線を描いて、妙な方向から岸の方へ歸り始めた。それで私の目的は遂に達せられなかつた。私が陸へ上つて雫の垂れる手を振りながら掛茶屋に入と、先生はもうちやんと着物を着て入違に外へ出て行つた。

At that time, rather than being uncompromising, I was suffering from laziness. So the next day, at the time when I was going to meet Sensei again, I went out to Kakechaya on purpose. Then, no Westerners came, and one teacher came wearing a straw hat. Sensei took off his glasses, put them on the table, wrapped his head in a towel, and went down the beach. When Sensei, like the day before, passed through the noisy bathers and swam alone, I suddenly felt an urge to follow him. I splashed fresh water over my head until I reached a suitable depth, and from there I cut my hand, aiming at Sensei. Then Sensei, unlike the day before, drew a kind of arc and began to return to the shore in a strange direction. So my purpose was finally unattained. When I went ashore and entered Kakechaya, waving my hands dripping with water, Sensei put on his kimono and walked out.
