「御目出たう」と云つて、先生が私のために杯を上げて呉れた。私は此盃に對して夫程嬉しい氣を起さなかつた。無論私自身の心が此言葉に反響するやうに、飛び立つ嬉しさを有つてゐなかつたのが、一つの源因であつた。けれども先生の云ひ方も決して私の嬉しさを唆る浮々した調子を帶びてゐなかつた。先生は笑つて杯を上げた。私は其笑のうちに、些とも意地の惡いアイロニーを認めなかつた。同時に目出たいといふ眞情も汲み取る事が出來なかつた。先生の笑は、「世間はこんな場合によく御目出たうと云ひたがるものですね」と私に物語つてゐた。
translation
The teacher raised a glass for me, saying, "I'll see you." I wasn't as happy about this cup as my husband was. Of course, one of the reasons for this was that my own heart did not have the joy of taking flight, as if it would resonate with those words. However, Sensei's words never seemed to suggest my happiness. The teacher laughed and raised a glass. In the midst of my laughter, I didn't acknowledge the slightest bit of wicked irony. At the same time, I couldn't comprehend his sincere desire to stand out. Sensei's laughter told me, ``People often want to show up at times like this.''
